We are united against SQ 788 because, though it is labeled as such, it is not about allowing access to true medical marijuana, to which many members of our coalition are not opposed. The reality is SQ 788 will, in practice, legalize recreational marijuana, and is simply bad public policy.
Unlike a normal doctor’s prescription, a medical marijuana license under SQ 788 lasts two years.
In addition to MDs and DOs, it appears that five other types of physicians (including veterinarians, dentists, optometrist, podiatrists, and chiropractors) will be able to sign a medical marijuana license. There is NO requirement for these “physicians” to have attended medical school.
Other states' medical marijuana laws and statutes contain lists of specific illnesses that allow treatment with marijuana. SQ788 purposefully contains no constraints on conditions, and will allow anyone over 18 to get a two-year marijuana license for any supposed condition or problem.
A patient only has to “articulate a medical need”--simply saying at times you have a headache will be enough to grant a license for marijuana for two years.
What unites us: We are opposed to SQ 788 because it is bad public policy.
We are concerned employers, law enforcement, medical / public health professionals and more.
As a coalition, we are free to have differing views on how to proceed in the future on medical marijuana legislation. In fact, some of our members would favor a more limited medical marijuana law that better protected employers, did not hamstring law enforcement, and potentially had a positive medical benefit, while others in the coalition would not support any use of smoke-able marijuana. We are united in that SQ 788 is bad public policy and should be defeated.
Remember, Oklahoma is not voting on medical marijuana. We're voting on SQ 788.
